/ Home / PsionStyle Indigestion / 12th February 2001

:Welcome:

Firstly, I feel I should apologize to you all that last week's Weekly Indigestion is now *this* week's Indigestion and last week's...errrm... sorta never happened. We've been working on the back end of the PsionStyle site in the hope that we will be able to provide you with more up-to-date Psion news. Anyhow, more of that in a moment, back to the Site for the time being. You now have the opportunity to submit your own news items; Go to http://www.psionstyle.co.uk/submitnews.htm and fill in the form, or just drop us an email at [email protected]. A couple more reviews have also found their way onto the site, along with seven new wallpapers, so check out those pages as well!

Back to the Psion news I promised you. In a press release today, Psion announced that they would be unveiling the details of their new palmtop to the public on the 1st March. Where does this leave us, the users? In a pretty good situation I would suggest; Psion have been quiet for a long time and fears were growing among members of the communities that they had finally lost it and given up the PDA market to Palm and PocketPC. This new release, which was accompanied by comments indicating that this new hardware would break into a market "30 times larger than Palm with its existing technology could ever dream of"shows that Psion have no plans to give in yet. The new Psions are to have integrated mobile phone technology, eventually providing us with true wireless web-access. It might just be time to get *slightly* excited! - The next few months will bring major developments, with the official releases of both Crystal and Quartz machines.

Revo Hinge Of Death

As I'm starting to get slightly worried about it I thought I'd bring this issue to the surface. Some of you may have heard of the Iomega Zip Drive's 'Click of Death'. Well now I'd like to introduce you to the Revo's very own 'Hinge of Death'

I've had my Revo for about three months now, and ever since I got it the hinge has, well, made a noise. It makes a leathery noise, such as a dragon's wing might make, when you open and close it. This hadn't really bothered me until recently, when the case has started to have an aversion to closing. If the Revo is on a flat surface, and you tug on the lid to close it, where before it would shut, it now jams open. You have to release it and apply gentle pressure to the rear silver bit before the case will close.

However, today when I opened the PalmTec case, it was to find my Revo's hinge in a sorry state. It had somehow jammed shut. Fortunately a gentle coaxing was able to put the hinge back into place, but with an audible click. Hopefully it won't happen again, because otherwise my Revo will have to be repaired, and can I cope without it?

So, if anyone else has had problems of this nature, could they drop me a line? Then my Revo won't feel alone in its predicament.

[Btw, Inertia! I don't think your 'testing' of the Palm-Tec cases has helped!]

PGG (aka Project Galactic Guide)
http://www.arcfan.demon.co.uk/pgg/
http://www.freepoc.org
http://www.pscience5.net/

In which delusional sets himself an impossible task! [Well I think so anyway...]

PGG is a website where you submit articles, and, if successful, your article is added to the black morass that is PGG. Why am I talking about it then, you may well ask. Well, those nice guys over at Psciences have compiled a version into EPOC Data format, so you can read it at you leisure on the train, by the river and with your eyes on your Psion's screen, if you so with.

Allowing submissions from anyone and everyone has lead to a wide variety of subjects, styles and, well, standards, in the guide. However, the overall standard is pretty good. Highlights include:

  • How cats are a mans best friend because they can have feline HIV;
  • How to extend arguments indefinitely;
  • How to spy on Area 51;
  • And where to stay if you are a hitchhiker many remote and not so remote cities.

This brings us to the reason for its existence. PGG is an idea stemming from the Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy, a book by Douglas Adams, as if you didn't know already. I'm not really sure beyond that, so check out the site and find out, because I've been press ganged into writing about it just because I'm attempting to prove it is possible to read every single article. Which I will do, btw. Out of the 423 articles in the Psion version, I'm on 89 at the moment.

Support emails are welcomed, as are donations, which will go towards bandages for my bleeding eyes.

PDF by mBrain Software
PDF Reader - FREEWARE

In which Inertia finds a vital EPOC tool.
Revo, RevoPlus, S5, S5mx, S7
http://www.mbrainsoftware.com
http://www.mbrainsoftware.com/Pdf/pdf.zip

Whether you like it or not, the web has forced certain file formats upon us. One of the more bizarre of these is PDF (Portable Document Format), developed by Adobe and read by their Acrobat Reader software. Originally developed as a format for printing documents, this has become one of the most common ways of storing manuals and other such documentation posted on the web. - It was only a matter of time before a reader became available for the Psion. Having said that, this iccle piece of software has been available for the Psion for some time, it is only now that I have discovered it! This app is *so* well written. It may take quite a while when rendering pages on a Series 5, but not at any point does it feel unstable and has allowed me to view all the pdf files I've needed to on my Psion with no problems.

Although I have only included links to PDF, the author has also released a fuller featured version, aptly named PDF+. This offers extras such as the ability to view encrypted files and launch a web browser on clicking a link. For more information, go to Go32.com (http://www.go32.com/g32a1030/product.html?p=444)

Piano by 3-Lib
Music Tool - SHAREWARE

In which Inertia annoys people with synthesized notes.
Revo, RevoPlus, S5, S5mx
http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk
http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/find/piano27.zip (S5, S5mx)
http://3lib.ukonline.co.uk/find/piano30.zip (Revo, RevoPlus)

Ever since I traded my Series 3c in for a 5, I've been on the look out for an app which would replace the function of PSTuner. I never *quite* managed it, but I came pretty fair close with Piano. Piano is a great peace of shareware which provides the musician with pretty much every tool he'd ever need, aside from a full score writer. Piano has three different modes, a metronome, a tuner, and, surprisingly, a virtual piano. All of these features work faultlessly, though it is worth noting that the tuner merely allows you to play long notes to which you can tune. Something which is great for musicians who have slightly better judgment than me! - Take a look, you might just find it useful...

:Last But One:

Tab - EPOC
Tab - SIBO

I was amazed yesterday when I discovered *this* one. Its a fair old essential when running SIBO which, with the exception of the Series 3c and 3mx, has no file browsing app. Pressing the 'Tab' key whilst in the system screen will bring up a file browser of some sorts. In EPOC, this iccle function will load the file browser which can be launched by tapping on the title bar, while in SIBO, the screen which is loaded provides a list view of the current directory. Pressing the 'Menu' key in this view reveals further functions such as 'Copy File' and 'File Attributes'. It is also worth noting that, when running a SIBO machine connected to your PC via PsiWin, this view will also allow access to your PC drives.

:All the News:

It seems that each week, I have to provide some sort of introductory comment to the week's news. Well this week I thought that I decided that I'd sulk instead...

Psion is to release a new machine

If you caught my last post, you probably took it with a pinch of salt. Well - I dont blame you, but news today confirms suspicions that a new Psion machine is on the way. It was announced that Psion are to unveil the details of their new machine on March 1st, which is to be an 'internet-enabled mobile phone and organiser.' Whooopie! For more information, ZDNet have the full story (http://www.zdnet.co.uk/news/2001/5/ns-20876.html).

New Psion?

There are suspicisions that Psion are to release a new machine within the next couple of months. These are a result price reductions on the Series 5mx machines in Dixons across the country.

DCP 7.3 is released...

Its been a little quiet recently. Don't get me wrong, things on the Psion front have been pretty active, it's just that I haven't been around to comment on it... Anyhow, back to the news - Maybe I'll manage to keep up with it from now on!
Today saw the release of what, in my opinion, must be the best 'shell' replacement for the Psion. DCP, or Desktops and Control Panel, offers a complete replacement for the standard system application for EPOC machines. This app is worth a closer look... (http://corisoft.free.fr/index_dcp.html)

Zip Manager 1.0

This morning, when I discovered about this iccle gem, I went straight to the website and grabbed it. Its *brilliant*. A zip program for the Psion has been available from RMR software for some time and, I have tried it on a number of occasions but never felt quite comfortable. I guess it really depends what your looking for. RMRZip offers the chance to save in a different, Psion specific format. - A feature which may be perfect for some users. For me, Zip Manager is a much less cluttered app which offers just the features I need. Anyhow - I should let you make your own minds up... Take a look... (http://www.epocware.com/zip.html)

Mah Jongg is updated!

Mah Jongg is one of those games I've never understood, and probably never will! That said, if I actually took the time to work out what *exactly* I was supposed to do, I'd probably love it. - Im odd like that!
Anyhow, for all of you who understand the game - or wanna try a new one.. Author Adrian Collister has released version 1.11. Take a look... (http://pages.eidosnet.co.uk/~a.collister/mahjongg.htm)

Graph32 hits version 2.0

I've never been a fan of graphing on my Psion. Ive always put it down to the length of time my Series 5 Original takes to plot the graphs. This little app might change all that. Version 2.0 of Graph 32 now boasts 3D surfaces - a feature which I have never seen in a windows app!
Take a look... (www.freepoc.org)

PsiDat 1.08 is released

Kevin Millican (http://kevin.millican.net) has again been busy, this time releasing version 1.08 of his PsiDat program. It provides a way to browse and edit all OPL DBMS data files. PsiDat includes more features than you can shake a stick at, so I'm not about to start listing them here, but if your interested, take a look at one of the websites mentioned.

SIBO has its benefits...

Now that SIBO is no longer the focus platform for most developers, owning a 3c or similar can be quite beneficial as you'll find many shareware apps are now available as freeware. EMCC (www.emccsoft.com), publishers of 'Programming Psion Computers', the bible of Psion programming [in my opinion], have taken this viewpoint, with their SIBO applications now being available as freeware. I was also impressed that they still offer the software on SSDs at a reduced price of 3.50 GBP! Take a look...
